Handling Change

Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end
— Semisonic (Closing Time)

This famous song line isn’t an original. It was penned in the first century by Roman philosopher Seneca, who lived from around 4BC to 65AD. The reason that the quote has hung around for so long is that it is a reminder that, throughout the ages, and today, change is here to stay.

Every ending makes room for a new beginning. Life has a cyclical nature, with one thing ending and another beginning. Even if we had a huge capacity, we couldn’t hold onto everything, so the quote helps us to remember that loosing something it’s time to let go of (an attitude, behaviour, way of thinking, relationship, job, neighbourhood… you name it, it could be anything) enables us to embrace a new beginning and make something good out of that.

In education there’s always something new happening, and often we don’t give ourselves time or space to process the change that we are subject to, or designing.

In this section of the Open Library, there are resources for reflection, journalling and discussion. Use them in any order you choose. You might want to apply them to different areas of your life – starting with an area that’s easier to handle, and giving yourself plenty of space where you choose to work through the bigger issues, with your team.

A group of people in a meeting room sits attentively in chairs arranged in a semi-circle, with a woman standing and gesturing, holding papers. A laptop and a drink are on a small table in the foreground. The room has plants and a fire extinguisher in the corner.
